Francesco Bellotta - Fiori ritrovati

CD Artesuono

Francesco Bellotta (1834-1907)
music for solo harp
first world recordings

 ESCAPE='HTML'

Gelsomina Naclerio, harpist and academic of Santa Cecilia, in her book "Memories and studies on the harp" (Naples 1894), in the final chapter on the most important composers of all times for the harp, talks about Francesco Bellotta, dedicating only to him an entire paragraph: "We would have many beautiful compositions for harp, if misfortune had not struck poor Bellotta from Palermo who went mad. Very few compositions of his remain, of a simple, confident style, and of a particular and brilliant genius."

During the nineteenth century Naples was a very important cultural and musical center: the composer and harpist Francesco Bellotta got trained within the great Neapolitan school of Harp, in turn giving life to the harp school of the Palermo Conservatory, of which his student and nephew Giuseppe Vitrano was the first teacher.
In 2022 I came across one of his scores by chance, remaining deeply touched by the beauty, compositional quality and originality of his music. I therefore started an intense research with the precious collaboration of the libraries of the Conservatories of Genoa, Milan, Pesaro, Bologna, Potenza and Verona, which I gratefully thank, thus bringing together all the scores for solo harp currently available by this great musician.

In Francesco Bellotta's music, starting from fantasies on opera themes up to original compositions of great strength and imaginative imagination, the harp sings and virtuosity is accompanied by a great emotional and expressive charge: these are true gems that I had the fortune to rediscover.

Digital album release - Sequenza II by L. Berio

Exactly sixty years ago Luciano Berio confronted himself with the solo harp, writing a masterpiece of literature for this instrument with brave, almost irreverent skill, irony and above all great compositional genius, reversing its fortunes, since the harp after Sequenza II has no longer remained the same. The sound planes of Sequenza II are multiple and are manifested through timbres and sounds that alternate and respond with such a speed as to make them almost imperceptible, albeit with a total structure and force, capable of creating a dramatic and overwhelming narration that goes beyond the physicality and "reality" of the instrument itself.

CD Le ninfee (The Water Lilies)

CD Artesuono 2020

… “But water is never alone, it creates a double landscape («gliding along the reflection / of a double landscape, rowing through both») and the sky mirrors itself in it. Thus, this music matches the movements of the air to the ones of the water and feels like breeze and wind.

A tenacity of giving oneself entirely dresses these liquid and airy sounds with a fabric, a firm weft, a destiny worked on the harp loom”. …

Simone Dubrovic

These are the words Simone Dubrovic uses to introduce the CD Le ninfee (The Water Lilies) by harpist Emanuela Battigelli, which the label Artesuono will release on December 9th. This collection of pieces for solo harp includes important first recordings of composers such as Ivan Fedele, Guido Guerrini and Leon Schidlowsky, in addition to a piece by Emanuela Battigelli herself and compositions from different ages and styles, from Schumann to The Doors and Robert Maxwell. Battigelli offers a rich kaleidoscope of sounds capable of stressing different musical textures and qualities of the instrument – enhanced by the recording mastery of Stefano Amerio, award winning sound engineer in demand among the most important international musicians – with depth and variety comparable to the ones of an orchestra.

The disc includes music by Battigelli, Satoh, Schumann, Daquin, Guerrini, Farkas, Schidlowsky, Fedele, The Doors and Maxwell.

Luis de Pablo - Improvisación for solo harp

dedicated to Emanuela Battigelli
world première 21 July 2019 Cividale (UD), Church of Santa Maria dei Battuti
Mittelfest

Thus Luis de Pablo expresses himself about this new work:
"Improvisación for solo harp, divided into three movements
(I. "Relato", II. "Scherzino, III." Studio "), was written for
Emanuela Battigelli and is dedicated to her with admiration and
respect. The work honors its name (improvisation)
because, although written with detail and precision, it requires
a freedom of reading by the interpreter (in this case
absolutely exceptional): form and writing require
an intimate collaboration. Perhaps the author remembered
Chopin and the "Presto" of his "Sonata Marcia Funebre" ... ».
